Finally, I get around to writing about how I spent my Christmas 2019. Midway through January. This post has been a long time coming. But it's here now.

We decided to do something different for Christmas this year, 'we' being my mum, my sister and I, and so we travelled up to Scotland to stay in the small town of Drumnadrochit, right on the bank of Loch Ness. To say this part of the world is pretty would be a harsh understatement. It really is like something straight out of Tolkien's books. The snowy mountains and the glittering loch make it the perfect idyllic getaway.

We stayed in some very nice lodges, up a bit of a twisty lane, located on the Great Glen Way, which if you're into your hiking, I' m sure you've heard of. The lodges we stayed in were called Ancarraig Lodges, good for us as we were able to bring the dog down as well. These lodges are perfect if you're looking for a simple getaway, nothing overly fancy but provided with the necessities, including a log fire which is just what you want being in the Scottish Highlands in December.

As for the Loch itself, we found a small village not far from us, Fort Augustus, where we could walk the dog along the water. We came across a restaurant, The Boathouse Lochside Restaurant, located right on the bank of the loch, where we were able to have hot chocolate whilst taking in the scenery. I strongly suggest going here if you ever find yourself in this part of Scotland, the views were stunning.

On Christmas Eve, while walking the dog, we stumbled across a lovely pottery and tearoom at the end of our lane. We were pleasantly surprised to find it open, and we had tea and cake whilst talking to the very friendly staff. We even came away with a lovely handmade butter dish. Another place I encourage people to visit.

As well as this, we took a trip to Plodda Falls, which was in fact the first waterfall I had ever seen, surprisingly, and it definitely did not disappoint. We also took a trip to Urquhart Castle, which includes a small entry fee but is so worth it just to see inside the ruins.

Before the trip ended, we were able to take a quick cruise of Loch Ness, which gave us an idea of its size. It really is spectacularly huge. As for the myth, we didn't see any monster but I could see why the story is so renowned. The loch is so massive and deep, its entirely possible there is something down there, waiting to be discovered.
